Film: Do Ketosapience Dream of Grassfed Beef?
We've worked with the Japan-based film production company Nextraveler to create soundscapes for a wide variety of projects. From short documentaries to film, they've entrusted us to provide music to bring out emotion in a scene or better convey a message through their visual work.
Filmed in Cuba with a Cuban cast and directed by Japanese media creator Tsuyoshi Takashiro, "Días de Gallo y Calmantes" required a wide variety of music from Afro-Cuban rhythms to grand orchestral themes, and even a scene with industrial rock.
When we first received the call for this project, we were surprised to find out that the entire movie would be in Spanish and had been filmed in Cuba.
As they hadn't yet added Japanese subtitles for the visuals, we made a trip out to their office in Tokyo to start working on the project together in person. The process of reading through the script and discussing the story with the director allowed us to develop a deeper understanding of the film and the unique cultural flavor of Cuba.

Our team utilized a variety of instruments and adapted to multiple genres to enhance the emotional impact of each scene, allowing Nextraveler to better translate their vision of this film with audiences both in Cuba, Japan, and the world.
"Do Keto Sapience Dream of Grassfed Beef?" follows the history and current state of 'wagyu beef' in Japan, with elements of traditional Japanese instrumentation sprinkled throughout while still remaining modern and easily enjoyable by an international crowd.
As one of the longest project periods we've worked on to date, this documentary followed Doctor Saito across both mainland Japan and it's islands, as well as New Zealand, in a quest to uncover the truth behind wagyu and the health risks and benefits to eating beef.
It was crucial to portray a sense of adventure and drive through the music, and particular focus was used in creating heartfelt scenes when Doctor Saito purchased and raised his own cow.
We even learnt a valuable life lesson on the importance of life and appreciating our food, when during the final premier of the film, the cow we had seen lovingly raised by Doctor Saito in the documentary was served at the event dinner.
